The purpose of this is threefold: (1) To provide a testbed where project partners (including Almende) can test attack vectors and fraud prevention solutions; (2) To monitor potentially fraudulent activity; and (3) To determine where honeytokens can effectively be used to detect this fraudulent activity before it becomes a big problem, all the while respecting the privacy of employees.

Data Analysis and NLP for Public Research Data

Are you looking for an internship with a strong focus on data science / Artificial Intelligence working on a very practical problem facing our organization? Then we are happy to get in touch with you!

The European Commission spends a significant amount on publicly funded research, which enables international groups of researchers to advance different fields of science that have great potential to solve current issues related to, for instance, climate change, healthcare and diseases to name a few. Almende is a small but important player in this field, and we have participated in over 70 successful national and international research projects over the past 20 years. We see great potential in making use of the data generated by public research projects to inform our own research agendas, contacts, and strategy as a company.

For your internship, we expect you to (1) dive into the wealth of public data about successful research projects, and figure out what core competencies drove them to success. This will likely require a combination of data science, NLP, and desk research. (2) Analyse our past research efforts, including information about success and failure, and correlate them with the core competencies identified in the previous step. (3) Support your analysis with visualizations and interactive tools, which can give more information to our researchers and business developers about, for instance, the evolution of a topic over time, or the international hotspots for research in certain fields. (4) Arrive at a recommendation for our company with respect to the use of public research data. This can take the form of a report, though we welcome innovative ideas about, for instance, the development of an interactive tool that can present your recommendations to a wider audience.

Must-have requirements:

  • MSc. student in the field of computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, or business information management;
  • Strong, demonstrable affinity with data, machine learning, programming and using different A.I. tools or methods;
  • Capable of working autonomously;
  • Have excellent proficiency in English. A working proficiency in Dutch is appreciated, but not required.

Project Automation

Almende frequently takes part in international R&D projects that run for multiple years. Typically, these projects have a long lead time between acquisition and project start, and involve different stakeholders and research topics. This leads to challenges when it comes to operationalising said projects. For this internship project, we are looking for candidates that want to maximize the impact of our R&D projects by creating a structured approach which eases the handover process between our business developers and researchers, and ensures the smooth operation of a project from start to finish.

This is a full-time paid internship. You’ll work in our office in Rotterdam. Remote working options are available and can be discussed with your supervisor.

We are looking for a self-starting intern with an affinity for both technical work and operational management. Ideally, you are in your 3rd or 4th year of your bachelor’s degree and are looking for a challenging real-world environment to put your development and organizational skills to the test. You have great communication skills and seek out information proactively, and are also capable of working out results independently while periodically verifying them with your supervisor. During this internship, you will be supervised by a senior researcher.

Responsibilities

During your internship, you will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Talking to our researchers and business developers to get a solid understanding of the different phases of an R&D project;
  • Investigate the different reporting and administrative requirements during an R&D project, and come up with a good approach and tools to ensure they are met in an efficient and effective manner;
  • Automate tasks common to all projects, such as creating project repositories, working directories, and documentation structures;
  • Advise our research and business development teams on the adoption of the above tools, come up with effective ways of working, and present best practices distilled from our past project experiences.

Must-have requirements:

  • Background in software engineering, ICT, or operational management with a link to the former two fields;
  • Experience translating real-world scenarios into data structures;
  • Knowledge in programming languages such as Javascript and/or Python;
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn;
  • Must be able to work in the Netherlands and have a good level of written and spoken English.

Nice-to-have requirements:

  • Experience working with distributed version control system such as Git;
  • Agile mindset and collaborative approach.
