Smart Buildings: Innovative workplace technology

Creating smart, adaptive environments that work for people

Buildings can do more than simply house people. They can actively contribute to comfort, well-being, and productivity.

Through collaboration in research and development projects, we develop the software, hardware, and IT solutions that make workplaces smarter and more responsive to the people who use them.

Workplace challenges in buildings

Employers face a complex task: optimizing space, managing energy use, improving safety, and supporting employee health and satisfaction, all while adapting to hybrid and dynamic work patterns.

Employees expect work environments that adapt to their needs, from lighting and temperature to meeting space availability.

Achieving this balance requires intelligent systems that connect people, spaces, and technology seamlessly, something traditional solutions struggle to deliver.

Our vision for Smart Buildings

We see buildings as active partners in the work experience, responding to what people need in real-time.

By equipping them with intelligent technology, developed together with partners in R&D projects, we enable workplaces that anticipate needs, foster collaboration, and promote well-being.

Our aim is a workplace where technology works quietly in the background, making every day easier and more productive for everyone.

Technology to make buildings smarter

In our R&D projects, we for example develop technologies that:

These solutions reduce waste, improve comfort, increase safety, and enable organizations to adapt their buildings to changing situations.

Smart Buildings ventures and R&D projects

Our experience in smart buildings comes from a diverse portfolio of funded research and development projects.

We take ideas and build working technology, sometimes even launching new companies when a solution shows strong potential.

Venture: Crownstone

Crownstone is an example of a venture built on technology first explored in R&D projects.

Using Bluetooth-enabled devices and an IoT platform, Crownstone makes buildings truly smart.

It enables control of lighting, appliances, and energy use, while also offering precise indoor location tracking for people and object.

The technology originated in collaborative research projects and is often used in other research projects.
