Founded in 2000 around the idea of applying self-organization to improve interaction between people and their environment, to create a better and more connected world.
Self-organization can be defined as the process whereby complex systems consisting of many parts tend to organize to achieve some sort of stable, pulsing state in the absence of external interference.
Self-organizing systems are observed in nature, but also in collaborations between humans.
We draw inspiration from these self-organizing systems and the conditions that enable them to emerge and thrive, and apply these to our projects and concepts

Almende = Commons
âAlmendeâ translated from Dutch means âthe commonsâ or âcommon landâ. Commons are not centralized, with many stakeholders involved. It is a complex system. We believe that technology can provide a âcommonsâ: a place for everyone to learn, exchange ideas, and connect with one another as a catalyst for self-organization.
Almende is organized as a commons itself. Almende is not owned by anyone. It is utilized and cared for by partners, that in time hand it to new partners.

About us
âAlmendeâ is an old Dutch word that can be translated in English as âcommonsâ, which is a term used in pre-industrial times to designate those parts of the environment for which customary law exacted specific forms of community respect. People called commons that part of the environment which lay beyond their own thresholds and outside of their own possessions, to which, however, they had recognized claims of usage, not to produce commodities but to provide for the substinence of their households.
Mission and Vision
Our vision is that the âcommonsâ offered by modern technology will be better used when individuals participate to the âglobal brainâ by applying the principles of self-organization. Our mission is then to create innovative ICT solutions to empower human beings to better organize their lives in an increasingly complex world.
History
Founded in 2000, we are a Dutch SME based in Rotterdam, working on R&D solutions applying on several domains of ICT. Our staff is very diverse in skills, level of education, and country of origin: this original mix allows us to propose innovative solutions to challenging problems, delivering cutting-edge solutions commercialized via our spin-off companies, all belonging to the âAlmende Investmentsâ-group.
Subsidiaries
Almende has numerous spin-off companies that formed as a result of innovative projects or ideas. These companies are independent but fall under the umbrella of Almende Investments.
