About the project

Commercial buildings frequently waste 10% to 30% of their energy due to faulty systems, suboptimal settings, and unpredictable user behavior.

This inefficiency leads to high operational costs, unnecessary CO2 emissions, and poor indoor air quality.

Existing building management systems collect vast amounts of data, but they lack automated tools to analyze it in real time.

The Brains4Buildings (B4B) project aims to solve this challenge by adding operational intelligence to utility buildings.

The project develops scalable, AI-driven software plug-ins and user-centric interfaces that enable systems to self-diagnose, optimize energy use, and adapt dynamically.

By integrating building, user, and environmental data through open standards, B4B turns existing structures into smart, energy-flexible environments.

Ultimately, the project seeks to achieve 20% to 30% energy savings, lower maintenance costs, and significantly reduce carbon emissions while improving occupant comfort, health, and well-being.

Goal

The goal of Brains4Buildings is to add operational intelligence to utility buildings using artificial intelligence.

We aim to develop scalable software solutions that enable buildings to self-diagnose and optimize energy use. This reduces energy waste by 20–30% while enhancing occupant comfort.

Our contribution

Almende will focus on software plug-in integration and user-centric data collection for smart building management.

We will lead the development and integration of modular software plug-ins for smart diagnostics, control, and energy flexibility in commercial buildings.

Our team will also leverage hardware technology, including Crownstone’s indoor positioning systems and smart plugs, to collect precise energy usage data and monitor occupancy.

By providing user-centric interfaces, we will ensure secure data integration while enhancing occupant comfort, health, and engagement.

Results

Brains4Buildings will deliver validated, AI-driven software plug-ins for smart building monitoring and control.

These solutions will achieve 20% to 30% energy savings and lower operational maintenance costs.

Additionally, the project will provide user-centric interfaces, standardized data integration tools, an open data platform, and a learning community.
