The CODECO project, standing for Cognitive Decentralised Edge-Cloud Computing, addresses the increasing complexity of the modern Edge–Cloud computing continuum, where data and applications are distributed across diverse environments, from the cloud to the far edge.
Modern sectors such as healthcare, smart cities, and industry increasingly rely on applications and data deployed across heterogeneous environments, ranging from centralised cloud infrastructures to far-edge and IoT devices.
However, existing solutions struggle to provide flexible, automated, and resource-efficient deployment across these environments, particularly under dynamic conditions such as fluctuating workloads, mobile edge nodes, or varying availability of green energy.
CODECO tackles these challenges by introducing a cognitive and decentralised orchestration platform that gives developers greater control over distributed network and data infrastructures.
The framework is built on key technologies including Kubernetes, with a strong focus on Open Cluster Management, Artificial Intelligence through Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning, and Software Defined Networking.
What differentiates CODECO is its ability to bring a higher degree of automation and intelligence to application deployment across the Edge–Cloud continuum.
It supports not only traditional Edge-to-Cloud scenarios but also Edge-to-Edge deployments, enabling adaptive decision-making and optimised resource utilisation across diverse and geographically distributed environments.
By providing transparent, trustworthy, and interoperable integration of heterogeneous infrastructures, CODECO empowers application developers, improves service quality for end users, and contributes to a more efficient, privacy-preserving, and sustainable digital infrastructure across Europe.

Almende contributes to the CODECO through the smart buildings use case, where the main technical challenge was enabling CODECO to manage a far-edge Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh of Crownstone devices using Kubernetes-based orchestration.
A key problem addressed by Almende was the lack of a direct interface between Kubernetes and resource-constrained BLE devices.
To overcome this, Almende developed and integrated a proxy layer based on a virtual kubelet, allowing individual Crownstones in the BLE mesh to be represented within the Kubernetes cluster.
This enabled CODECO to Far-Edge deploy, manage, and optimise micro-applications on Crownstones despite their limited resources and non-IP-based communication model.
In addition to development work, Almende carried out extensive testing and validation of the smart buildings demonstrator and worked closely with CODECO developers to debug integration and runtime issues across the Cloud, Edge, and Far-Edge layers.
Through this collaborative process and resulting innovations, Almende strengthened its expertise in far-edge device integration, Kubernetes extensibility, and Cloud-to–Far-Edge orchestration, while contributing to the stability and maturity of the CODECO framework and helping to provide developers with the necessary tools to build smarter, more resilient, and energy-efficient digital infrastructures across Europe.
